Alsace and Baden-Württemberg (second part) Alsazia e Baden-Württemberg (seconda parte)

So here we are, for the second part of this trip. Last week we've visited Alsace, now let's cross the border and go to Germany, precisely to Baden-Württemberg.

Eccoci qui, per la seconda parte di questo viaggio. La scorsa settimana abbiamo visitato l'Alsazia, ora attraversiamo il confine ed andiamo in Germania, per la precisione nel Baden-Württemberg.

Schlossplatz

Stuttgart's focal point is Schlossplatz (Castle's square) where both the Old Castle (Altes Schloss) and the New Castle (Neues Schloss) stand. 
If you want to visit the city centre only, I'd say you can spend half a day here, while you're going to need more time if you want to add a visit to the Porsche Museum or the Mercedes-Benz one, to the Ludwigsburg Castle or the pig museum (yes, it's a real thing).

Il punto nevralgico di Stoccarda è la Schlossplatz (Piazza del Castello), dove si affacciano sia il castello vecchio (Altes Schloss) che quello nuovo (Neues Schloss).
Se volete visitare solamente il centro della città, potete dedicarci mezza giornata, mentre vi servirà più tempo se volete aggiungere la visita al museo della Porsche, piuttosto che a quello della Mercedes-Benz, al castello di Ludwigsburg, piuttosto che al museo del maiale (sì, esiste per davvero!!).

Triberg

Triberg is definitely worth a visit! Its waterfalls (entry costs €5/adult) are easily accessible and close both from the town centre and the parking. I'd suggest you to park in town for at least a couple of hours to give you the time to see the waterfalls from different points and have a stroll around Triberg.

Triberg and Furtwangen have an history of cuckoo clocks makers, so you'll find respectively a shop with 1.000 clocks and a museum dedicated to them.

Triberg vale la pena di essere visitata! Le sue cascate (entrata € 5/adulto) sono facilmente accessibili e vicine sia al centro città che ai parcheggi. Vi suggerisco di parcheggiare in città per almeno un paio d'ore in modo da darvi il tempo di vedere le cascate da più punti e farvi un giretto a Triberg.

Triberg e Furtwangen hanno una tradizione di orologi a cucù, quindi vi troverete rispettivamente un negozio con 1.000 orologi ed un museo a loro dedicati.

Hohenzollern Burg

The time to visit the Hohenzollern Castle is very variable: first you should decide if you want to climb or take the shuttle (From the higher car park it takes 25 minutes on foot, if you opt for the shuttle is € 3,30 per adult for a return trip) and if you want to visit the outside plus the cellar and both chapels or even the inside rooms. This is because there are two type of tickets and visits are only through scheduled guided tours. Here you can find all the info.

Il tempo da dedicare alla visita del castello di Hohenzollern è molto variabile: prima dovreste decidere se volete arrivarci a piedi o prendere la navetta (dal parcheggio più alto ci vogliono 25 minuti a piedi, se optate per il bus il costo è di € 3,30 per adulto per andata e ritorno) e se volete visitare gli esterni, le cantine e le cappelle o anche le stanze interne. Questo perchè ci sono due tipi di biglietti diversi e le visite all'interno sono possibili solo tramite tour guidato ad orari prefissati. Qui trovate tutte le informazioni.

Tübingen.Tubinga

Tübingen is really nice, you should visit it, even if only for a hour or so, you won't regret it. I mean, look at this square!

Tubinga è molto carina, dovreste davvero visitarla, anche se avete solamente un'oretta da dedicarle, non ve ne pentirete. Guardate questa piazza!

Food: not mentioning the usual staples in french and german cuisine that you can find in other regions, in Alsace you should try flammkuche (a very thinly rolled bread dough, topped with creme fraiche/fromage blanc/munster cheese and onions/lardons/mushrooms) and choucroute (a main dish with sausages, charcuterie, cabbage and potatoes), while in Baden-Württemberg dishes of the Swabian tradition include maultaschen (a type of pasta filled with vegetables and/or meat), and, of course, the black forest cake.

Bretzels (in the morning, sliced and buttered), or covered in whatever seed you may think of are common in both areas.

Cibo: evitando di citare i capisaldi della cucina francese e tedesca che potete trovare in altre regioni, in Alsazia dovreste provare la flammkuche (una base di pasta di pane tirata molto sottile, farcita con creme fraiche/fromage blanc/munster e cipolle/pancetta/funghi) e la choucroute (piatto unico con salsicce, insaccati, verza e patate), mentre nel Baden-Württemberg i piatti della tradizione sveva includono i maultaschen (un tipo di pasta tipo raviolo o rotolo di pasta farcita di verdure e/o carne) ed ovviamente, la torta della foresta nera.

I bretzel (al mattino tagliati a metà ed imburrati) o ricoperti di qualsiasi semino che vi venga in mente, sono comuni ad entrambe le zone.

Argh.... that reflection! Anyway, you get the idea: bretzels, bretzels, bretzels!

Alsace and Baden-Württemberg (first part) Alsazia e Baden-Württemberg (prima parte)

Probably you've already seen some pictures of my holidays between Germany and France on Instagram a while ago, here's a more detailed description, in case you're interested in visiting the area.

Probabilmente avete già visto le foto delle mie vacanze tra Germania e Francia su Instagram un po' di tempo fa, in questo post vi darò una descrizione più dettagliata, nel caso vi interessasse visitare la zona.

Hohenzollern Burg

We landed in Stuttgart (with Lauda motion, owned by Ryanair), rented a car (check out if your rental charges you for crossing the border) and after staying one night in Stuttgart we visited Strasbourg, Ribeauvillè, Riquewihr and Colmar, then we were back in Germany to spend a night in the Black Forest, then visited Triberg, Hohenzollern Burg, and finally Tübingen.

A few considerations about the places we visited.

Siamo atterrati a Stoccarda (con Lauda motion, di proprietà Ryanair), abbiamo noleggiato un'auto (controllate se il noleggio vi addebita un costo per l'attraversamento del confine) e dopo una notte a Stoccarda abbiamo visitato Strasburgo, Ribeauvillè, Riquewihr e Colmar, siamo poi rientrati in Germania per passare una notte nella Foresta Nera, e poi abbiamo visitato Triberg, Hohenzollern Burg e alla fine Tubinga.

Un paio di considerazioni sui posti che abbiamo visitato.

Strasbourg

As this post was becoming a bit too long, I decided to split in half, in this one you'll find the part regarding France, in the next one I'll talk about Germany and Alsatian and Swabian cuisine.

Strasbourg, Ribeauvillè and Riquewihr are really lovely, of course Strasbourg is much bigger, but I'd say that they are all totally worth a visit. 

If you stop in Strasbourg for a day, there's a really cheap ticket that costs € 6,90 for up to three people that you can use for 24 hours on buses and trams (all the other fares here).

Siccome questo post stava diventando troppo lungo, ho deciso di dividerlo a metà, in questa parte vi parlerò della parte francese del nostro viaggio e nel prossimo della parte tedesca ed in più della cucina alsaziana e sveva.

Strasburgo, Ribeauvillè e Riquewihr sono davvero adorabili, naturalmente Strasburgo è molto più grande, ma tutte valgono la pena di essere visitate.

Se vi fermate per almeno 24 ore a Strasburgo, c'è un biglietto davvero economico che vi copre sia per autobus che per tram per 24 ore fino a tre persone per € 6,90 (tutti gli altri tipi di biglietti qui).

A particular mention to the Ribeauvillè wine-making cooperative (Cave de Ribeauvillè, established in 1895), where you can have free wine tastings. And by the way, a bottle of french wine makes a great souvenir!

Una menzione particolare alla cantina sociale di Ribeauvillè (Cave de Ribeauvillè, fondata nel 1895), dove potete assaggiare gratuitamente dei vini. E comunque una bottiglia di vino direi che è un gran bel souvenir!

Colmar

Colmar is a bit crowded, we found lots of groups of tourists and people everywhere in the city centre. I mean, it's nice but felt more touristic than others.

Colmar era piuttosto affollata, molti gruppi di turisti e gente dappertutto nel centro. E' carina, ma più turistica di tutte le altre.

Strasbourg

Travel Inspo: Normandy, land of history, nature and impressionists . Idee di viaggio: Normandia, terra di storia, natura ed impressionisti

Once upon a time there was a woman who had almost planned a holiday that wasn't meant to happen ... Ah ah ah ... Truth is that while searching for a low-cost flight around Europe, the route to the Paris Beauvais-Tillè airport was one of the cheapest. I never took into consideration this airport to get to Paris because is the farthest, but I (to be honest, my sister) discovered that is the closest to Normandy. When I think about Normandy the first thing that comes up to my mind are the Normandy landings (that I left apart in this travel), in fact, probably because of that I had a pretty gloomy and dark idea of Normandy, but I was pleaseantly  belied when searching for this holiday.

C'era una volta una donna che aveva quasi pianificato una vacanza che non si sarebbe tramutata in realtà ... Ah ah ah ... La verità è che ricercando voli economici in giro per l'Europa, la tratta per Parigi Beauvais-Tillè era una delle più economiche. Non avevo mai considerato questo aeroporto per visitare Parigi perchè è il più distante, ma ho scoperto (a dire il vero, mia sorella) che è il più vicino alla Normandia. Quando penso a questa area, la prima cosa che mi viene in mente è lo sbarco in Normandia (i cui luoghi ho lasciato da parte in questo viaggio) infatti, probabilmente per questo avevo un'immagine abbastanza cupa e scura della Normandia, ma sono stata piacevolmente smentita facendo ricerche per questa vacanza.

Now, if you're here (given the title of this post) probably you like impressionists, so Rouen, Normandy's capital city, with its Notre Dame Cathedral, it's for sure familiar to you, because it's the subject of a series of paintings by Monet (around 30). Another place to visit is the Old Market Square (Vieux-Marchè), where Joan of Arc was executed, there you can find a church that is a both a Catholic church and a civil monument to commemorate this heroin. The architect gave the church the shape of an upside down boat, as in many traditional Normandy churches.

Ora, se siete qui (visto il titolo di questo post) probabilmente vi piacciono gli impressionisti e quindi Rouen, che è la capitale della Normandia, con la sua Cattedrale di Notre Dame, vi è sicuramente familiare, perchè è il soggetto di una serie di dipinti di Monet (circa 30). Un altro luogo da visitare è la piazza del vecchio mercato (Vieux-Marchè), dove Giovanna d'Arco fu giustiziata, lì troverete una chiesa che è sia una chiesa cattolica che un monumento civile per commemorare questa eroina; l'architetto ha dato alla chiesa la forma di una barca rovesciata, come in molte chiese tradizionali normanne.

Go north-west to Etretat, to admire its chalk cliffs, from the town two arches are visible: Porte d'Aval and Port d'Amont. Porte d'Aval is famous for being described by Guy de Maupassant as an elephant dipping his trunk in the sea (look at the picture above and tell me if you agree).

Ora andate a nord-ovest fino a Etretat, per ammirarne le falesie, dalla cittadina sono visibili anche due archi: Porte d'Aval e Port d'Amont. Porte d'Aval è famosa per essere stata descritta da Guy de Maupassant come un elefante che immerge la proboscide nell'acqua (date un'occhiata nella foto qui sopra e ditemi se siete d'accordo).

Le Havre's port is the second in France and the central city is a UNESCO World heritage site: almost completely distroyed by bombings in 1944, it has been rebuilt by french architect August Perret, pioneer of the architectural use of reinforced concrete. And can you spot in the picture "Le Volcan" (the volcano)? It's the art centre designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
Back to our impressionists, the Andrè Malraux Modern Art Museum is the second in France for number of impressionist paintings. 
A stop here sound really interesting!

Il porto di Le Havre è il secondo di Francia ed il centro della città è un sito UNESCO: quasi completamente distrutto dai bombardamenti nel 1944, è stato ricostruito dall'architetto belga August Perret, pioniere ad impiegare il cemento armato nelle costruzioni. E lo riuscite a vedere "Le Volcan" (il vulcano)? E' il centro culturale disegnato da Oscar Niemeyer.
Tornando ai nostri impressionisti, il Museo di arte moderna Andrè Malraux è il secondo il Francia per numero di dipinti impressionisti. 
Una sosta qui sembra davvero interessante!

Crossing the Pont de Normadie (Normandy Bridge), you get to Honfleur, especially known for its old port, characterized by its houses with slate-covered frontages and while there why not visiting the Saint Catherine's church, the largest church in France made out of wood? Moreover, the ceiling has the shape of an upside down boat. Sound familiar?

Attraversando il Pont de Normandie (Ponte della Normandia), arriverete a Honfleur, conosciuta per il suo vecchio porto, caratterizzata dalle sue case con muri a travi e mentre siete lì perchè non visitare la chiesa di Santa Caterina, la più grande chiesa di Francia fatta in legno? In più, la volta ha la forma di una barca rovesciata. Suona familiare?

Caen is the place where you could spend a few nights, it's central and from there you can reach all the destinations I mention in this post in one hour and an half's time by car (except for Giverny which is another half hour far away). Actually, you could come here right after Rouen to make it your base if you'd like stay most of the nights in the same place. Also, if you want to visit the D-Day beaches this could be your starting point.

Caen è la località dove potreste passare un po' di notti, è centrale e da qui potete raggiungere tutte le destinazioni menzionate in questo post in un'ora e mezza di macchina (a parte Giverny per cui ci vuole un'altra mezz'ora). A dire il vero, potreste venire qui subito dopo Rouen per farne la vostra base se volete stare la maggior parte delle notti nello stesso posto. Un'altra cosa: se volete visitare le spiagge del D-Day questo può essere il vostro punto di partenza.

Why did I had Granville to this trip? Because of the Christian Dior Museum, which by the way, is surrounded by a garden (with free entry), in case your travel companions aren't interested in fashion. If you happen to visit this year there's an exhibition called the "Grace de Monaco, Princess en Dior", until 17th November 2019.

Perchè ho aggiunto Granville a questo viaggio? Perchè c'è il Museo Christian Dior, che, tra l'altro, è circondato da un giardino (ingresso gratis), nel caso in cui i vostri compagni di viaggio non siano appassionati di moda. Se lo visitate quest'anno c'è una mostra intitolata "Grace de Monaco, Princess en Dior", fino al 17 novembre 2019.

Giverny. Monet's home is a must for his fans but even for those who love gardening. Clearly Monet had a vision of how his garden should have looked like: he had trees cut to be replaced by flower beds (you can download the garden's calendar of flowering from the website) and then bought an adjoining piece of land to create a pond, completed by a Japanese bridge and water lilies.

Giverny. La casa di Monet è un must per i suoi ammiratori ma anche per gli amanti del giardinaggio: ha fatto tagliare degli alberi per rimpiazzarli con aiuole di fiori (potete scaricare dal sito il calendario della fioritura del giardino) e poi ha comprato un pezzo di terra adiacente per crearne un laghetto completo di ponte giapponese e ninfee.

So, this is end of my tour across Normandy. Of course, if you don't land to Beauvais-Tillè, you can reach Normandy in several ways, go to the Normandy tourism website to find out. And if you've never been to Versailles you could even add that, it's at 1 hour's time by car from Giverny.

A real fan of impressionism? Next year, from 3rd April to 6th September 2020 there's the Normandy Impressionist Festival.

Quindi, siamo arrivati alla fine di questo giro della Normandia. Ovviamente, se non atterrate a Beauvais-Tillè, potete raggiungere la Normandia in molti modi, visitate il sito turismo Normandia per scoprirlo. E se non avete mai visitato Versailles, potreste aggiungerla, è ad un'ora di macchina da Giverny.
Siete dei veri appassionati dell'impressionismo? Il prossimo anno, dal 3 al 6 settembre 2020 si terrà il Festival dell'impressionismo della Normandia.
