Boldini and fashion Boldini e la moda

I have to admit that I didn't know Boldini's artwork before this exhibition, and usually I'm not so much into portraits (I prefer landscapes), but when I saw some posts on socials about this exhibition, I knew I had to visit.

Devo ammettere che non conoscevo le opere di Boldini prima di questa mostra, e di solito non mi piacciono molto i ritratti (preferisco i paesaggi), ma quando ho visto alcune foto sui social, sapevo che dovevo visitare questa mostra.

To mark the first retrospective on Boldini in Paris, July 1931, a few months after his death, Vogue dedicated an article to him with the emblematic title, Giovanni Boldini: Painter of elegance. For decades, Boldini had been the arbiter of Parisian taste, and following his death, he became legendary for his portraits which brought beauty to life in a shockingly modern style, and inspired generations of fashion designers from Christian Dior to Giorgio Armani, from Alexander McQueen to John Galliano.

Nel luglio del 1931, in occasione della prima retrospettiva allestita a Parigi, «Vogue» dedicava a Boldini, scomparso solo qualche mese prima, un articolo dal titolo emblematico: Giovanni Boldini. Pittore dell’eleganza. Nel momento in cui il ritrattista che per decenni era stato l’arbitro del gusto parigino lasciava la scena iniziava il mito di un artista che, avendo dato vita a un canone di bellezza moderno e dirompente, avrebbe ispirato generazioni di stilisti, da Christian Dior a Giorgio Armani, da Alexander McQueen a John Galliano.

(From the website) The charm of Boldini’s portraits, in which his models appear worldly, sure of themselves and of their own seductive powers, owes much to the relationship the artist had with the emerging industry of charm and celebrity, and to which he made a notable contribution. Organized by Fondazione Ferrara Arte and the Museo Giovanni Boldini di Ferrara, the exhibition Boldini and Fashion tells for the first time the story of this fascinating connection. The results of a lengthy study of documents has allowed the reconstruction of Boldini’s social and professional connections. The exhibition shows how Boldini was able not only to portray the fashion of the time, but how he continues to influence it even today.

Il magnetismo dei ritratti di Boldini, nei quali i suoi modelli appaiono mondani, sicuri di sé e del proprio potere di seduzione, deve molto al rapporto che il pittore ebbe con la nascente industria della moda alla quale, a sua volta, dette un contributo notevole. Organizzata dalla Fondazione Ferrara Arte e dalle Gallerie d’Arte Moderna-Museo Giovanni Boldini di Ferrara, la mostra Boldini e la moda racconta per la prima volta la storia di questo affascinante legame: frutto di un lungo studio che attraverso i documenti ha permesso la ricostruzione della fitta rete di rapporti sociali e professionali dell’artista, la rassegna illustra infatti come Boldini fu capace di farsi interprete della moda del tempo fino a giungere a influenzarne le scelte, al pari di un contemporaneo trendsetter.

Established in Paris at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries, at the crossroads of every taste and trend of modernity, Boldini immortalized the voluptuous elegance of the cosmopolitan elite of the Belle Époque. He preserved for posterity the images of the key figures of this legendary era, from Robert de Montesquiou to Cléo de Mérode, from Consuelo Vanderbildt to the Marchioness Casati, helping to make them icons of glamour.

Affermatosi nella Parigi tra Otto e Novecento, crocevia di ogni tendenza del gusto e della modernità, Boldini ha immortalato la voluttuosa eleganza delle élite cosmopolite della Belle Époque. I love this portrait, it's Consuelo Vanderbilt, with her son Lord Ivor Spencer-Churchill (yes, relative to Winston Churchill), I was curious to read more about her life, that includes a secret engagement and an unhappy marriage to a Duke (more here) and while you read about her life, click on her son's link ...

Occidentalism. Modernity and occidental art in kimonos Occidentalismo. Modernità e arte occidentale nei kimono

Last I week I talked about an exhibition about Roberto Capucci's dresses, in the same museum there was another very interesting exhibition called "Occidentalism. Modernity and occidental art in kimonos from the Manavello collection 1900-1950".

La scorsa settimana vi ho parlato della mostra con gli abiti di Roberto Capucci, nello stesso museo c'era un'altra mostra molto interessante: "Occidentalismo. Modernità ed arte occidentale nei kimono della collezione Manavello 1900-1950). [...] An exhibition dedicated entirely to kimonos. Not ordinary ones, but those made in Japan between 1900 and the 1940s, pieces that reflect the imperial will to occidentalize the country.

So as in the previous century, Japonism flared up everywhere in Europe, influencing a significant part of the artistic production, at the beginning of 1900 the occidental taste breaks out in Japan. And this wave of novelty invests even that garment which is a symbol of tradition: the kimono. Alongside the traditional patterns we now see colourful designs that recall promptly Cubism, Futurism and other European artistic trends. There is even a particular kimono that celebrates the 1940 tripartite pact Rome-Berlin-Tokyo, where the Italian flag is half hidden on the inside of the seams while the Rising Sun and the swastika is everywhere.

So much has been said and written about Orientalism and in particular about Japonism, which is the influence of Japanese arts over the European ones between the end of 1800s till the beginning of 1900s, but we still we do not know so much about the reverse connection, which is that complex and faceted phenomenon that brought some Japanese arts to absorb forms and contents of occidental origin.

It happened with paintings, that interpreted prospective originally, and happened with kimonos that, more than any form of art, were influenced by the changing of the Japanese society of the time, transferring accurately the effects on fabrics, used as a painting surface.[...]
This period is one of the most complicated and troubled in Japanese history: the passage from feudal state to superpower, culminated with the second World War.

From a sociocultural point, the Rising Sun Land lived this time lapse (end 1800s-1940s) with a conflictual attitude, on the borderline between the thrill of novelty coming from overseas and the reassuring attachment to tradition.

In the occidental imaginary collective, kimonos represent the icon itself of Japan in its persuasive elegance and exoticism. But only a few know that a good part of kimonos made in the first half of 1900s, the Meisen kimonos, are not part of this category, implementing patterns hinted by movements like Avant-garde (from Viennese Secession to Glasgow School, from Futurism to Cubism, from Divisionism to Jackson Pollock's abstract Expressionism), inspired by contemporary historic facts or by technological progress, in an exciting and surprising kaleidoscope of colours, patterns, decoration techniques and weaving, inspired from occidental textile production as well. [...]

Garments are sophisticated, meant for middle-upper class, not tailored for export. They could be enjoyed by people of culture or curious or wilful of being at the pace of time. They had for sure their vision: their country at the same level to other important countries, able to absorb their knowledge and their costumes but with their own pride about their own diversity. [...]

L'atelier dei fiori (Flowers atelier)

I recently discovered a museum in a town close to mine: it's the Fashion museum in Gorizia. What made me discover this museum? An exhibition of Roberto Capucci's dresses, paired with photographs of flowers by Massimo Gardone, called "L’atelier dei fiori. Gli abiti di Roberto Capucci incontrano le immagini di Massimo Gardone".

Ho scoperto di recente l'esistenza di un museo vicino ad Udine: è il museo della moda e delle arti applicate di Gorizia. Cosa me l'ha fatto scoprire? La mostra "L’atelier dei fiori. Gli abiti di Roberto Capucci incontrano le immagini di Massimo Gardone".

The ones you find below were embroidered with glow-in-the-dark beads. You enter a room where the light is on for 2/3 minutes, and then it turns off for 30 seconds.

Quelli qui sotto sono stati ricamati con perline fluorescenti. Si entra in una sala dove la luce resta accesa per 2/3 minuti, e poi si spegne per 30 secondi.

Diana: Her fashion story

A quick reminder for all of you who love a fashion exhibition: "Diana: Her fashion story", at Kensington Palace is closing on 17th February.
While you're there you can even see the costumes from the movie "The favourite", until 8th February.
And you know what? When I visited this exhibition I was quite surprised that I actually remembered so many dresses about her (look at the pictures at the bottom of this post that I took in 2017).

Biennale Arte 2017

A few months ago I saw a picture of "Support" by Lorenzo Quinn being installed in Ca' Sagredo in Venice, in occasion of the Biennale Art Exhibition, and I decided that I had to see it, together with the Exhibition, since I had never been there! I can say that I didn't like some things, I didn't understand others, but I can say that I enjoyed the experience a lot, I found overall a lot of inspiration!

Qualche mese fa ho visto una foto dell'opera "Support" che veniva installata a Ca' Sagredo a Venezia, in occasione della Biennale d'arte ed ho deciso che dovevo andare a vedere sia quest'opera che la mostra, anche perchè non c'ero mai stata! Posso dire che alcune cose non mi sono piaciute, altre non le ho capite ma l'esperienza mi è piaciuta molto e ho trovato molte fonti di ispirazione!

Se mi seguite su Instagram, avete già visto alcune delle installazioni che mi sono piaciute di più eccone delle altre ...
