Once upon a time there was a woman who had almost planned a holiday that wasn't meant to happen ... Ah ah ah ... Truth is that while searching for a low-cost flight around Europe, the route to the Paris Beauvais-Tillè airport was one of the cheapest. I never took into consideration this airport to get to Paris because is the farthest, but I (to be honest, my sister) discovered that is the closest to Normandy. When I think about Normandy the first thing that comes up to my mind are the Normandy landings (that I left apart in this travel), in fact, probably because of that I had a pretty gloomy and dark idea of Normandy, but I was pleaseantly  belied when searching for this holiday.

C'era una volta una donna che aveva quasi pianificato una vacanza che non si sarebbe tramutata in realtà ... Ah ah ah ... La verità è che ricercando voli economici in giro per l'Europa, la tratta per Parigi Beauvais-Tillè era una delle più economiche. Non avevo mai considerato questo aeroporto per visitare Parigi perchè è il più distante, ma ho scoperto (a dire il vero, mia sorella) che è il più vicino alla Normandia. Quando penso a questa area, la prima cosa che mi viene in mente è lo sbarco in Normandia (i cui luoghi ho lasciato da parte in questo viaggio) infatti, probabilmente per questo avevo un'immagine abbastanza cupa e scura della Normandia, ma sono stata piacevolmente smentita facendo ricerche per questa vacanza.

Now, if you're here (given the title of this post) probably you like impressionists, so Rouen, Normandy's capital city, with its Notre Dame Cathedral, it's for sure familiar to you, because it's the subject of a series of paintings by Monet (around 30). Another place to visit is the Old Market Square (Vieux-Marchè), where Joan of Arc was executed, there you can find a church that is a both a Catholic church and a civil monument to commemorate this heroin. The architect gave the church the shape of an upside down boat, as in many traditional Normandy churches.

Ora, se siete qui (visto il titolo di questo post) probabilmente vi piacciono gli impressionisti e quindi Rouen, che è la capitale della Normandia, con la sua Cattedrale di Notre Dame, vi è sicuramente familiare, perchè è il soggetto di una serie di dipinti di Monet (circa 30). Un altro luogo da visitare è la piazza del vecchio mercato (Vieux-Marchè), dove Giovanna d'Arco fu giustiziata, lì troverete una chiesa che è sia una chiesa cattolica che un monumento civile per commemorare questa eroina; l'architetto ha dato alla chiesa la forma di una barca rovesciata, come in molte chiese tradizionali normanne.

Go north-west to Etretat, to admire its chalk cliffs, from the town two arches are visible: Porte d'Aval and Port d'Amont. Porte d'Aval is famous for being described by Guy de Maupassant as an elephant dipping his trunk in the sea (look at the picture above and tell me if you agree).

Ora andate a nord-ovest fino a Etretat, per ammirarne le falesie, dalla cittadina sono visibili anche due archi: Porte d'Aval e Port d'Amont. Porte d'Aval è famosa per essere stata descritta da Guy de Maupassant come un elefante che immerge la proboscide nell'acqua (date un'occhiata nella foto qui sopra e ditemi se siete d'accordo).

Le Havre's port is the second in France and the central city is a UNESCO World heritage site: almost completely distroyed by bombings in 1944, it has been rebuilt by french architect August Perret, pioneer of the architectural use of reinforced concrete. And can you spot in the picture "Le Volcan" (the volcano)? It's the art centre designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
Back to our impressionists, the Andrè Malraux Modern Art Museum is the second in France for number of impressionist paintings. 
A stop here sound really interesting!

Il porto di Le Havre è il secondo di Francia ed il centro della città è un sito UNESCO: quasi completamente distrutto dai bombardamenti nel 1944, è stato ricostruito dall'architetto belga August Perret, pioniere ad impiegare il cemento armato nelle costruzioni. E lo riuscite a vedere "Le Volcan" (il vulcano)? E' il centro culturale disegnato da Oscar Niemeyer.
Tornando ai nostri impressionisti, il Museo di arte moderna Andrè Malraux è il secondo il Francia per numero di dipinti impressionisti. 
Una sosta qui sembra davvero interessante!

Crossing the Pont de Normadie (Normandy Bridge), you get to Honfleur, especially known for its old port, characterized by its houses with slate-covered frontages and while there why not visiting the Saint Catherine's church, the largest church in France made out of wood? Moreover, the ceiling has the shape of an upside down boat. Sound familiar?

Attraversando il Pont de Normandie (Ponte della Normandia), arriverete a Honfleur, conosciuta per il suo vecchio porto, caratterizzata dalle sue case con muri a travi e mentre siete lì perchè non visitare la chiesa di Santa Caterina, la più grande chiesa di Francia fatta in legno? In più, la volta ha la forma di una barca rovesciata. Suona familiare?

Caen is the place where you could spend a few nights, it's central and from there you can reach all the destinations I mention in this post in one hour and an half's time by car (except for Giverny which is another half hour far away). Actually, you could come here right after Rouen to make it your base if you'd like stay most of the nights in the same place. Also, if you want to visit the D-Day beaches this could be your starting point.

Caen è la località dove potreste passare un po' di notti, è centrale e da qui potete raggiungere tutte le destinazioni menzionate in questo post in un'ora e mezza di macchina (a parte Giverny per cui ci vuole un'altra mezz'ora). A dire il vero, potreste venire qui subito dopo Rouen per farne la vostra base se volete stare la maggior parte delle notti nello stesso posto. Un'altra cosa: se volete visitare le spiagge del D-Day questo può essere il vostro punto di partenza.

Why did I had Granville to this trip? Because of the Christian Dior Museum, which by the way, is surrounded by a garden (with free entry), in case your travel companions aren't interested in fashion. If you happen to visit this year there's an exhibition called the "Grace de Monaco, Princess en Dior", until 17th November 2019.

Perchè ho aggiunto Granville a questo viaggio? Perchè c'è il Museo Christian Dior, che, tra l'altro, è circondato da un giardino (ingresso gratis), nel caso in cui i vostri compagni di viaggio non siano appassionati di moda. Se lo visitate quest'anno c'è una mostra intitolata "Grace de Monaco, Princess en Dior", fino al 17 novembre 2019.

Giverny. Monet's home is a must for his fans but even for those who love gardening. Clearly Monet had a vision of how his garden should have looked like: he had trees cut to be replaced by flower beds (you can download the garden's calendar of flowering from the website) and then bought an adjoining piece of land to create a pond, completed by a Japanese bridge and water lilies.

Giverny. La casa di Monet è un must per i suoi ammiratori ma anche per gli amanti del giardinaggio: ha fatto tagliare degli alberi per rimpiazzarli con aiuole di fiori (potete scaricare dal sito il calendario della fioritura del giardino) e poi ha comprato un pezzo di terra adiacente per crearne un laghetto completo di ponte giapponese e ninfee.

So, this is end of my tour across Normandy. Of course, if you don't land to Beauvais-Tillè, you can reach Normandy in several ways, go to the Normandy tourism website to find out. And if you've never been to Versailles you could even add that, it's at 1 hour's time by car from Giverny.

A real fan of impressionism? Next year, from 3rd April to 6th September 2020 there's the Normandy Impressionist Festival.

Quindi, siamo arrivati alla fine di questo giro della Normandia. Ovviamente, se non atterrate a Beauvais-Tillè, potete raggiungere la Normandia in molti modi, visitate il sito turismo Normandia per scoprirlo. E se non avete mai visitato Versailles, potreste aggiungerla, è ad un'ora di macchina da Giverny.

Please tell me I'm not the only one: you're on holiday, and start looking around you saying: "You know what? I'd live here, it's really a nice place/town/neighbourhood!" And then you start seeing houses that you *totally* cannot afford saying to your fellow travel companions "Yes, this house is just about fine, but you know what? We should hire a gardener!" feeling like Downton Abbey's Dowager Countess.

Ditemi che non sono l'unica: siete in vacanza e cominciate a guardarvi intorno dicendo: "Sapete che c'è? Ci vivrei qui, è un bel posto/quartiere/città!" E poi cominciate a vedere delle case che sono *totalmente* fuori dalla vostra portata e dite ai vostri compagni di viaggio "Sì, questa può anche andare, ma sapete che c'è? Dovremmo assumere un giardiniere!" stile contessa Violet di Downton Abbey.

Sidmouth: too many hotels on the seafront, better staying on the hill, oh yes, can you spot that white house with lots of land up on that hill?! That's it!

Binge watching: June

Well, the first two reviews are not technically a binge-watch, because they were aired on TV, but still ...

The Rookie (Season 1)

It's been a bit awkward to get used to Nathan Fillion not being Castle anymore but instead 40-year old LAPD rookie John Nolan: the environment (police) is the same, he lives in a gorgeous villa (that reminded me of Castle's house) and the show starts a bit slow, reminding me of Rookie Blue (and it's not a bad thing). Fortunately it finds its way, has a good pace, and each rookie has its own story to tell. At the end of season 1 there's a nice cliffhanger with an health scare for one character and a doubt about trusting another.

The only thing that doesn't make much sense to me was the relationship between Nolan and Chen, not long or important enough to make us really want to get them back together.

The Rookie (Stagione 1) - andato in onda su Rai2
E' stato un po' strano abituarsi al fatto che Nathan Fillion non sia più lo scrittore Richard Castle ma la quarantenne recluta della polizia di Los Angeles John Nolan: l'ambientazione è la stessa (distretto di polizia), lui vive in una splendida villa (che ricorda un po' l'appartamento di Castle) e la serie comincia un po' lentamente, ricordando un po' Rookie Blue (e non è una brutta cosa).
Per fortuna trova la sua strada, ha un buon ritmo ed ogni recluta ha una sua storia da raccontare. Alla fine della prima stagione c'è un bel cliffhanger che ci lascia in sospeso un paio di questioni che riguardano la salute di un personaggio e l'affidabilità di un altro.
L'unica cosa che secondo me non ha avuto molto senso è la storia tra Nolan e Chen, non abbastanza lunga o importante per volere che noi pubblico tifassimo perchè ritornassero assieme.

New Amsterdam (Season 1)

Another medical? Yes! I mean, I stopped watching Grey's and there's Ryan Eggold  and Freema Agyeman, so why not?

At the beginning it can look like a mosaic of other medicals, but probably it's because there have been so many medical shows that you can't help but compare.

It's fast paced (with the help of the soundtrack), and Max Goodwin's fight with cancer becomes one of the most important subjects of the show. The personal lives of the doctors are well-balanced with patients' cases. Maybe the episodes I didn't like where the last ones: first because, let's say it, we're left with a cliffhanger that is huge (a bit Shonda's style) and we don't clearly know how three characters are. Second, I shipped Bloom and Reynolds but it doesn't look like they're meant to be together (unless that cliffhanger shakes things up) and I unfortunately see this chemistry between Helen and Max, but he's married, he's having a baby and I shouldn't ship them, but .... 
So, great job, these are all good reasons to (impatiently) wait for season 2!

New Amsterdam (Stagione 1) - andato in onda su Canale5

Un altro "medical"? Sì! Voglio dire, ho smesso con Grey's e ci sono Ryan Eggold e Freema Agyeman, quindi perchè no?
All'inizio sembra un po' un mosaico di altre serie dello stesso genere, ma probabilmente perchè ci sono state e ci sono così tante serie a tema ospedaliero che è impossibile non fare confronti.
E' molto ritmata (grazie anche alla colonna sonora) e la battaglia di Max Goodwin con il suo cancro diventa uno dei temi più importanti della stagione. Le vite personali dei dottori sono ben bilanciate con i casi dei pazienti. Forse le puntate che mi sono piaciute di meno sono le ultime: in primis perchè ci lasciano con un cliffhanger enorme (tipo Shonda), quindi non sappiamo come stanno tre personaggi. Secondo perchè io voglio vedere Bloom e Reynolds assieme ma non sembra che gli autori della serie siano della mia stessa idea (a meno che questo finalone scuota un po' le cose) e poi sfortunatamente vedo la chimica tra Helen e Max, ma lui è sposato, sta per avere un figlio e non dovrei volerli vedere assieme ma ...
Quindi, bel lavoro, ci sono tutti i motivi per non vedere l'ora di vedere la seconda stagione (sperando in una programmazione migliore di Mediaset).

Continuum (Whole series, Season 1-4)
I'm really glad I watched it because I saw some episodes of the first and maybe the second season on TV years ago and so I had the chance to catch up with the whole series.
The first two series begin with a voice-over that says: "2077. My time, my city, my family. When terrorists killed thousands of innocents, they were condemned to die. They had other plans. A time travel device sent us all back sixty-five years. I want to get home, but I can't be sure what I will return to if history is changed. Their plan: to corrupt and control the present in order to win the future. What they didn't plan on was me." 
It's Keira Cameron's voice (Rachel Nichols), a law enforcement officer that teams up with a detective (Carlos Fonnegra, unware who she really is), and Alec Sadler (who Kiera, and all the gang from 2077 know well but that in the present he's only a talented teenager).
The storyline becomes a little more complicated on the third and fourth seasons due to different time-lines crossing each other, some relationships that change and the end I'd say is well played even if I'm still asking myself if everything fits in its place.
If you like sci-fi series, give it a go.

Continuum (Serie completa, Stagioni 1-4) - su Netflix
Sono contenta di aver recuperato questa serie perchè Rai4 penso avesse mandato in onda solo le prime due stagioni e così ho potuto recuperarla.
Le prime due stagioni cominciano con una voce fuori campo che dice "2077. Il mio tempo, la mia città, la mia famiglia. Quando dei terroristi hanno ucciso migliaia di innocenti, sono stati condannati a morte. Loro avevano altri piani. Un congegno per viaggiare nel tempo ci ha rimandati indietro di 65 anni. Voglio andare a casa, ma non sono sicura cosa troverò se la storia verrà cambiata. Quello che non avevano pianificato sono io." 
E' la voce di Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols), un agente di polizia che si allea con un detective (Carlos Fonnegra, ignaro di chi lei sia realmente) e con Alec Sadler (che Keira e tutta la "banda" del 2077 conoscono molto bene ma che al momento è solo un teenager geniale).
La storyline diventa un po' complicata nella terza e quarta seria con diverse linee temporali che si incrociano, alcune relazioni che cambiano ed il finale è ben realizzato anche se mi sto ancora chiedendo se tutto torna.
Se vi piacciono le serie fantascientifiche, guardatevela.

Alta mar/High Seas (Season 1)
I think everyone who watched the trailer thought: Oh look, it's Murder on the Orient-Express moved to the Titanic!
So, yes, it feels a bit like that, you have two sisters, ready to embark to a ship that sails from Spain to Rio de Janeiro and let's say it: from the very beginning almost nothing is what it seems. The combination of the glamorous 1940s ship together with secrets, lies and murders recalls Agatha Christie's mysteries and on the TV side "Death in paradise": we know that the murderer is amongst that restricted group of people, we "only" have to find out who he/she is.
It's a good mixture of mistery, romance and murder and if you can't wait to know what happens in the next season, you'll be happy to know that it has already been filmed.

Alto mare (Stagione 1) - su Netflix
Penso che tutti quelli che hanno guardato il trailer hanno pensato: Oh guarda, delitto sull'Orient-Express trasferito sul Titanic!
Sì, in effetti sembra un po' così, abbiamo due sorelle, pronte ad imbarcarsi su una nave che dalla Spagna le porterà a Rio de Janeiro e diciamolo: già dall'inizio quasi nulla è come sembra. La combinazione dell'elegante nave degli anni Quaranta e di segreti, bugie e delitti ricorda i romanzi di Agatha Christie e dal lato televisivo ricorda "Delitti in paradiso": sappiamo che l'assassino/a rientra in un ristretto gruppo di persone, dobbiamo "solo" scoprire chi sia.
E' una buona combinazione di mistero, amore ed omicidi e se non vedete l'ora di vedere cosa succede nella prossima stagione, sarete felici di sapere che la seconda stagione è già stata girata.
