Occidentalism. Modernity and occidental art in kimonos Occidentalismo. Modernità e arte occidentale nei kimono

Last I week I talked about an exhibition about Roberto Capucci's dresses, in the same museum there was another very interesting exhibition called "Occidentalism. Modernity and occidental art in kimonos from the Manavello collection 1900-1950".
.

Translated from the museum website
[...] An exhibition dedicated entirely to kimonos. Not ordinary ones, but those made in Japan between 1900 and the 1940s, pieces that reflect the imperial will to occidentalize the country.

So as in the previous century, Japonism flared up everywhere in Europe, influencing a significant part of the artistic production, at the beginning of 1900 the occidental taste breaks out in Japan. And this wave of novelty invests even that garment which is a symbol of tradition: the kimono. Alongside the traditional patterns we now see colourful designs that recall promptly Cubism, Futurism and other European artistic trends. There is even a particular kimono that celebrates the 1940 tripartite pact Rome-Berlin-Tokyo, where the Italian flag is half hidden on the inside of the seams while the Rising Sun and the swastika is everywhere.

So much has been said and written about Orientalism and in particular about Japonism, which is the influence of Japanese arts over the European ones between the end of 1800s till the beginning of 1900s, but we still we do not know so much about the reverse connection, which is that complex and faceted phenomenon that brought some Japanese arts to absorb forms and contents of occidental origin.
It happened with paintings, that interpreted prospective originally, and happened with kimonos that, more than any form of art, were influenced by the changing of the Japanese society of the time, transferring accurately the effects on fabrics, used as a painting surface.[...]
This period is one of the most complicated and troubled in Japanese history: the passage from feudal state to superpower, culminated with the second World War.

From a sociocultural point, the Rising Sun Land lived this time lapse (end 1800s-1940s) with a conflictual attitude, on the borderline between the thrill of novelty coming from overseas and the reassuring attachment to tradition.

In the occidental imaginary collective, kimonos represent the icon itself of Japan in its persuasive elegance and exoticism. But only a few know that a good part of kimonos made in the first half of 1900s, the Meisen kimonos, are not part of this category, implementing patterns hinted by movements like Avant-garde (from Viennese Secession to Glasgow School, from Futurism to Cubism, from Divisionism to Jackson Pollock's abstract Expressionism), inspired by contemporary historic facts or by technological progress, in an exciting and surprising kaleidoscope of colours, patterns, decoration techniques and weaving, inspired from occidental textile production as well. [...]

Garments are sophisticated, meant for middle-upper class, not tailored for export. They could be enjoyed by people of culture or curious or wilful of being at the pace of time. They had for sure their vision: their country at the same level to other important countries, able to absorb their knowledge and their costumes but with their own pride about their own diversity. L'atelier dei fiori (Flowers atelier)

I recently discovered a museum in a town close to mine: it's the Fashion museum in Gorizia. What made me discover this museum? An exhibition of Roberto Capucci's dresses, paired with photographs of flowers by Massimo Gardone, called "L’atelier dei fiori.
If you happen to be in Gorizia, the exhibition closes on 5th May, more information here (website only in italian).
I think I've got nothing more to say, I'll let you daydream with some of the dresses on display.
.

The ones you find below were embroidered with glow-in-the-dark beads. You enter a room where the light is on for 2/3 minutes, and then it turns off for 30 seconds.
.

And this is the result!
.
E questo è il risultato!

And finally, my favourite!

E alla fine, il mio preferito!

Binge watching: March

Secret City - season 2 (Under the eagle) on Netflix
We left Harriet (Anna Torv) ready to serve her time in prison. As this season begins we know she has served 2 years and soon two questions come to up my mind: where are Sean Brimmer and Mal Paxton? I expected to see them again! The first helped her and literally saved her life (in some way I hoped there was a future for them) and the second finished the first season visiting her in prison, telling he was ready to pay for her lawyer ... Did he? Was it useful? Who knows?? A part from that (you won't be given these answers) Harriet is again involved in a web of power, secrets, lies, corruption and homicides. Really good!
Note: As I don't watch many australian shows it was nice to see again Doris Younane (Moira on Mc Leod's Daughters)

E' servito a qualcosa? Chi lo sa?? ...

Party of five - season 6 (final season) on Netflix
Even if some story lines feel a bit far-fetched (all these members moving in and moving out of the house), I have to say I liked how they ended the show. Recently I noticed that the end of season or, more important of a series, is very important to me and in this case it was the end of a journey that began 6 months after the death of the Salinger's parent and finishes 6 years after, two couples are back together and all the things have been put in the right place to me. I was only a bit upset by Sarah's exit: after spending so many years in the show I feel she deserved a better goodbye (I know they made a spin-off that didn't work out and that was about her life in New York, but still ...).
.
Party of five (o Cinque in famiglia, come veniva tradotto all'epoca) - stagione 6 (finale di serie) su Netflix

Northern Rescue - season 1 on Netflix
Again here, a death that shakes a family: mother-of-3 Sarah dies. Add a father who can't admit the loss of his wife, a missed promotion and a new job opportunity in his hometown (and where his sister-in-law still lives) and here you are: you have three teenagers moved from Boston to a small town in Canada.
I still have to make up my mind ... Is it too short (too many things and feelings that the characters have to face in 10 episodes) or too superficial in dealing with all these events?
*Spoilers ahead*
For example the storyline of Charlie's ex-husband means that in the first episode number she makes everything possible to have her brother-in-law and nephew/nieces move in with her and 9 episodes later she's ready to go away with her ex-husband (What??).
Anyway, the end of the season hints that there's going to be another one, but at the end the members of this family are more split apart than at the beginning. Do you need to watch it? No.

See you nexth month for april's reviews!

Devo ancora decidermi ... E' troppo corta (troppe cose e troppe sentimenti che i protagonisti devono affrontare in 10 episodi) o troppo superficiale nell'affrontare tutti questi eventi?
*Seguono spoiler*
Anche no.

#100DaysOfSewing . #100GiorniDiCucito

So, if you follow me on Instagram, you already know that I'm doing #100DaysOfSewing for #The100DayProject.
After borrowing my mum's sewing machine for a few months, I first dived in the Scout Tee by Grainline Studio ...
.

I liked it so much, that I made another one ... no wait, I started to make another one, but than I stopped because I got entangled in hacking the pattern, then after some small adjustments to some garments I already had, I sewed this sewing machine cover (free pattern by Closet case patterns, slightly hacked).
.

Then I cut all the pieces for a pair of trousers but I can't seem to be able to assemble them.
Soooo, this year #The100DayProject is dedicated to getting back to the basics, and getting myself back to sewing. I mean, I was gifted with a sewing machine, it's really time to use it! Follow my Instagram stories for day-by-day updates!
.
