1) The views from the Sky Garden are spectacular, and let's say it, free, so you know, a lot cheaper than The London Eye and the Shard!!! Unfortunately Storm Gareth was in full swing, so we couldn't go on the terrace.

London Stansted airport hotels Alberghi all'aeroporto di Londra Stansted

While planning my next trip to London, I discovered that there are 5 hotels in the Stansted airport area (that you can reach on foot or with a shuttle, ideals for those who get to the airport by public transport). This comes quite handy when you have to leave London very early or if you arrive in London late and don't feel like roaming around with your suitcases in the middle of the night.

The ones reachable on foot are: Radisson Blu and Hampton by Hilton.

The other three, served by a shuttle that leaves from bay 21 of the Stansted Airport Coach Station, are: Holiday Inn Express, Novotel and Premier Inn. More information about the shuttle service on Traveline.

When considering which one to choose, remember that the shuttle costs £3 each way per person and that breakfast is included for Hampton and Holiday Inn.

Unfortunately, I won't be using any of these this time, but if you have any experiences of these hotels, let me know!

Mentre pianificavo il mio prossimo viaggio a Londra, ho scoperto che ci sono 5 alberghi nell'area dell'aeroporto di Stansted (che potete raggiungere a piedi o con una navetta e quindi ideali per chi arriva in aeroporto con i mezzi pubblici). Sono particolarmente comodi se dovete partire da Londra molto presto o se arrivate a Londra molto tardi e non avete voglia di essere in giro con le vostre valigie nel cuore della notte (che so, tipo il volo Ryanair da Ronchi che arriva alle 23 a Londra???, così uno a caso 😉).

Quelli raggiungibili a piedi sono: Radisson Blu ed Hampton by Hilton.

Gli altri tre, serviti da una navetta che parte dalla banchina 21 della stazione delle corriere dell'aeroporto di Stansted, sono: Holiday Inn Express, Novotel e Premier Inn. Maggiori informazioni sul servizio navetta su Traveline.

Quando li considerate per la scelta, ricordatevi che la navetta costa £3 a testa a tratta e che la colazione è inclusa per l'Hampton e l'Holiday Inn.

Sfortunatamente, non riuscirò ad alloggiare in nessuno di questi alberghi per questa volta, ma se avete esperienze di questi alberghi, fatemelo sapere!

Diana: Her fashion story

A quick reminder for all of you who love a fashion exhibition: "Diana: Her fashion story", at Kensington Palace is closing on 17th February.
While you're there you can even see the costumes from the movie "The favourite", until 8th February.
And you know what? When I visited this exhibition I was quite surprised that I actually remembered so many dresses about her (look at the pictures at the bottom of this post that I took in 2017).

So, here we are with the last part of this "London low-cost" series, once you've bought your ticket and booked you're accomodation, let's see how you car spare some £££ visiting London:

- Subscribe to VoucherCodes to get some deals especially for shopping and dining

- Look for some deals on Groupon UK: deals on meals, mainly, and lots lots lots of afternoon teas and cocktails

- Are you getting to London by train? Usually your answer is yes, then go to Days out guide, you can print vouchers for a lot of attractions paying 1 ticket for 2 people (why not spare some £££ to hop on the London Eye?)

- Subscribe to the visitlondon.com newsletter, to be up-to-date on what's on and interesting articles such as this one Free attractions in London.

- Go to a tourist office, for example there's one near St Paul's Cathedral, and grab a copy of London Planner, it's free and there are lots of ideas on what to do

- If you're staying for some days (more than a week-end) or if you're a large group consider applying for some fidelity cards such as Boots (you can apply online before travelling), Marks and Spencer, Superdrug, Costa Coffee, etc.

- Cercate offerte su Groupon: offerte su pasti, principalmente, e un sacco ma proprio un sacco di afternoon tea e cocktail
- Arrivate a Londra in treno? Di solito la risposta è sì, allora andate su Days out guide, potete stampare dei buoni per diverse attrazioni al 2x1 (perchè non risparmiare un po' di sterline per andare sul London Eye)?
- Iscrivetevi alla newsletter di visitlondon.com, per essere aggiornati sugli eventi in corso e per scoprire articoli interessanti come questo Free attractions in London.
- Visitate un ufficio del turismo, per esempio ce n'è uno vicino alla Cattedrale di Saint Paul, e prendete una copia del London Planner, è gratis e ci sono un sacco di idee su cosa fare
- Se restate a Londra per più giorni (più di un week-end) o se siete parte di un gruppo numeroso, considerate l'idea di sottoscrivere delle carte fedeltà come quella di Boots (potete richiederla anche on-line prima di partire), Marks ans Spencer, Superdrug, Costa Coffee, ecc.

My low-cost London tips, third part: accomodation Consigli low cost su Londra, terza parte: alloggi

Hi! I'm terribly late with this post, so let's go straight to see where you could sleep:

Accomodation

Well, I've been in London several times and usually in group of 2 or 3 adults and found that Airbnb was too expensive for me, I've stayed in a Bed and Breakfast that doesn't exist anymore, in an hotel with an awful smell of smoke, holes in the sheets and too many steps to go to breakfast, so finally this is my top three that have what I look for in an hotel: cleanliness, silence, cheap rates (all of these have en-suite rooms, tea/coffee making facilities in bedroom and provide soap/shampoo):

Premier Inn Tottenham Hale (zone 3)

- especially easy to reach if you arrive at Stansted (you don't even need to take the tube 👍), but even if you arrive at Victoria station from Gatwick, you just hop on the Victoria Line and you get there

- the hotel is 2 minutes from the tube/rail station

- free wi-fi

- close to a commercial park that includes Costa Coffee,Boots, Lidl, Next, ...

Note: Premier Inn it's very cheap well in advance, the closer you get to the date of the travel, the higher the rate; consider that their rooms accommodate at maximum 2 adults and 2 children, so if you are for example a group of 3 adults, you need to book 2 rooms.

Travelodge Finchley (zone 4)

- close to tube station

- close to bakery and 2 supermarkets open till late

- family rooms can accommodate up to 4 adults

- plenty of coffee/tea available for free at reception

- several places where you can have breakfast/dine/have a pint

Star Hotel (zone 2)

- rooms may be a bit smaller than the previous hotels but there's an advantage: breakfast is included (and to one of my colleagues' opinion they have one of the best croissant he has eaten in a while, you might want see if he's right)

- free wi-fi

- close to pubs, restaurants and shopping centres

TIP: When you book an hotel check out the check-in/check-out times, they can be very different!

Premier-Inn check-in from 14.00/check-out 12.00

Travelodge check-in from 15.00/check-out 12.00 (early check-in/late check-out options available)

Star Hotel check-in from 13.30/check-out 10.30

Ciao! Sono in super ritardo con questo post, quindi andiamo subito a vedere dove potreste dormire:

Alloggio

Partiamo dalle premesse: sono stata a Londra varie volte, in genere eravamo 2 o 3 adulti e Airbnb era troppo caro, sono stata in un B&B che non esiste più, in un albergo con una orrenda puzza di fumo e buchi nelle lenzuola e troppe troppe scale per andare a colazione, quindi alla fine queste sono le migliori soluzioni che hanno quello che cerco in un alloggio: pulizia, silenzio, economicità (tutti hanno bagno privato, bollitore in camera e forniscono shampoo/sapone):

Premier Inn Tottenham Hale (zona 3)
- facilmente raggiungibile se arrivate a Stansted (non dovete nemmeno prendere la metro), ma anche se arrivate alla Victoria Station da Gatwick, prendete la Victoria Line della metro e via
- l'hotel è a 2 minuti dalla stazione della metro/del treno
- wi-fi gratis
- vicino ad un parco commerciale con Costa Boots, Lidl, Next, ...

Nota: Premier Inn è molto economico se acquistato molto in anticipo, mano a mano che ci si avvicina alla data del soggiorno la tariffa si alza notevolmente; tenete inoltre presente che in una camera si possono ospitare al massimo 2 adulti e 2 bambini, quindi se per esempio siete in 3 adulti dovete per forza prenotare 2 camere.

Travelodge Finchley (zona 4)
- vicino alla stazione della metro
- vicino ad una pasticceria e 2 supermercati aperti fino tardi
- le camere possono ospitare fino a 4 adulti
- bustine di te/caffè gratis (oltre a quelli in camera) disponibili alla reception
- diverse opzioni per colazione/cena/bersi una pinta

Star Hotel (zona 2)
- le camere sono un po' più piccole rispetto a quelle degli alberghi menzionati sopra ma c'è il vantaggio che la colazione è inclusa (e a detta di un mio collega che c'è stato, i croissant sono tra i migliori che abbia assaggiato, magari vale la pena vedere se ha ragione)
- wi-fi gratis
- vicino a pub, ristoranti e centri commerciali

CONSIGLIO: Quando prenotate un albergo fate attenzione agli orari di check-in/check-out, posso essere molto diversi!

Premier-Inn check-in dalle 14.00/check-out 12.00

Travelodge check-in dalle 15.00/check-out 12.00 (check-in anticipato /check-out posticipato disponibili a pagamento)

Star Hotel check-in dalle 13.30/check-out 10.30

TRANSPORT AND LUGGAGE

From the airport

Go the official website of the airport you're landing at and discover which options you have, I suggest the train but you can choose even the coach (there are several operators), but consider that if you're travelling during the rush hour, the time of travel might be longer than stated (been there, done that 👎).

TIP: If you travel from Stansted Airport, I recommend using Stansted Express to reach London, buy your ticket in advance, it's cheaper (for example if you buy your one-way ticket to Liverpool Street station today to travel on the same day it costs £ 17.00, but if you buy it 1 month in advance it's £ 14.00, 2 months in advance only £ 7.00).

Tube

Go to the official site Transport for London: the journey planner is great, and when you're looking for your accomodation it helps you understand how long it takes from the airport, and of course there is all the information you need about the tube fares, the oyster card, children fares, etc.

Luggage deposit

If you need to leave your luggage for a few hours, for example before departing or if you get too early to check-in your hotel/accomodation, consider Stasher, I used this one, which is close to Euston Station, it was fast and cheaper than leaving our suitcases at the train station.

Outside London: moving around UK

If you plan to move around UK or to go to London from Europe and you're on a tight budget, consider Megabus, otherwise National Rail will help you plan your trip by train.

TRASPORTO E BAGAGLI

Dall'aeroporto

Andate sul sito ufficiale dell'aeroporto dove atterrate e scoprite le varie opzioni possibili, io vi suggerisco il treno ma potete anche optare per la corriera (ci sono diversi operatori), ma tenete presente che se siete in viaggio durante l'ora di punta i tempi del tragitto si possono allungare rispetto a quando dichiarato (e ve lo dico per esperienza diretta 👎).

CONSIGLIO: Se arrivate allo Stansted Airport, vi consiglio di usare Stansted Express per arrivare a Londra, comprate il biglietto in anticipo, è molto più economico (per esempio il biglietto di sola andata per Liverpool Street Station per oggi stesso è di £ 17,00, acquistato con un mese di anticipo £ 14,00, due mesi in anticipo solo £ 7,00).

La metropolitana, ovvero The tube

Andate sul sito ufficiale Transport for London: il "journey planner" è ottimo e quando state cercando l'alloggio vi aiuta a capire quanto impiegate ad arrivare dall'aeroporto, ed ovviamente ci sono tutte le informazioni sulle tariffe, la carta oyster, le tariffe per i bambini, ecc.

Deposito bagagli

Se dovete lasciare il vs. bagaglio per qualche ora, per esempio prima di partire o se arrivate troppo presto rispetto all'orario di check-in del vs. hotel/alloggio, provate Stasher, io ho utilizzato questo, che è vicino alla Euston Station, servizio veloce e più economico del deposito bagagli della stazione.

Fuori Londra: muoversi nel Regno Unito

Se avete intenzione di fare una gita fuori porta o di andare a Londra dall'Europa ed avete un budget ristretto, provate Megabus, altrimenti National Rail vi aiuta a pianificare il vostro viaggio in treno.

My low-cost London tips, first part: flights Consigli low cost su Londra, prima parte: voli

Let's face it: for us, EU citizens, travelling to London (and of course to the UK) after the 29 of March it's going to be more expensive (passport to issue, roaming and it's still unclear if flight fare are going to be affected), so if you're on a tight budget and would like to go to London, it's the right time to start thinking about it. Considering that low-cost has a different meaning for every person, here are my tips.

While writing this post I realized that it was becoming a very long one, so today we'll deal with flights.

Diciamocelo: per noi, cittadini UE, andare a Londra (e naturalmente nel resto del Regno Unito) dopo il 29 marzo sarà più costoso (passaporto da richiedere, roaming e non si capisce ancora quanto le tariffe aeree verranno influenzate), quindi se avete un budget ridotto e volete andare a Londra, è il momento di cominciare a pensarci. Considerando che il termine "low-cost" ha un significato diverso per ogni persona, questi sono i miei suggerimenti.

Scrivendo questo post mi sono resa conto che stava diventando lunghissimo, quindi oggi mi concentrerò sui voli.

FLIGHTS

I've always flown to London from Europe, so my experience is "restricted" to this continent 😉! Your best friend anyway is Google Flights, where you can select up to 5 airports for departure and arrival.

Generally speaking Ryanair and Easyjet have lots of low-cost flights to London but even British Airways can have interesting fares, for example think about using different airlines for outward and inward journeys.

Note about registered luggage and options for choosing your seat:

When checking out prices, go until the very last step of the booking procedure (before payment) to discover how much they charge, for example:

Ryanair, during the booking procedure usually offers seats at half price (around £/€ 2) and you can register a different number of luggage, for example 2 suitcases going to London, and 3 when you return (you know for all those hot cross buns, shortbread and Pimm's you've fallen in love with).

Easyjet doesn't offer discounts for choosing your seat and the minimum cost is £/€ 4 more or less, so if you're a couple and don't care choosing your seat, you can spare that money but it can make quite a difference if, for example, you're flying with children/elderly or anyway you want to choose the seats for all the people in your group. As per luggage you have to check-in the same number of luggage for inbound/outbound.

British Airways gives you the choice between the "basic" and "plus" fare (ok there's even the "business" class, but it's not for our pockets, right 😉?) with basic you buy only the ticket, with "plus" you can choose your seat and check in a suitcase.

VOLI

Ho sempre volato su Londra dall'Europa, quindi la mia esperienza è "ristretta" a questo continente 😉. Il vostro migliore amico in ogni caso è Google Flights, potete selezionare fino a 5 aeroporti di partenza ed altrettanti di arrivo.

In generale Ryanair ed Easyjet hanno molti voli low-cost per Londra ma anche British Airways può avere tariffe interessanti, per esempio potete pensare di fare i voli con due compagnie diverse.

Nota per il bagaglio registrato e le opzioni per la scelta del posto a sedere:

Quando valutate i prezzi, andate fino all'ultimo step della procedura (quello subito prima del pagamento) per capire quali siano i costi, per esempio:

Ryanair, durante la procedura di prenotazione offre di solito la possibilità di scelta del posto a metà prezzo (circa £/€ 2) e potete registrare un numero diverso di bagagli, per esempio 2 valigie andando a Londra e 3 rientrando (per tutti quei hot cross buns, shortbread e Pimm's di cui non potete fare più a meno).

Easyjet non offre sconti sulla scelta del posto ed il costo minimo è di circa £/€ 4, quindi se siete una coppia e non vi interessa l'assegnazione del posto potete risparmiare i soldi ma può fare la differenza se, per esempio, viaggiate con bambini o persone anziane o comunque volete scegliere i posti per il vostro gruppo. Per i bagagli dovete registrare lo stesso numero di bagagli sia per l'andata che per il ritorno.

British Airways vi da' la scelta tra la tariffa "basic" e quella "plus" (ok c'è anche la "business" ma non è per le nostre tasche vero 😉?), con la basic avete solo il biglietto, con la plus potete scegliere il vostro posto ed imbarcare un bagaglio.
