Alsace and Baden-Württemberg (second part) Alsazia e Baden-Württemberg (seconda parte)

So here we are, for the second part of this trip. Last week we've visited Alsace, now let's cross the border and go to Germany, precisely to Baden-Württemberg.

Eccoci qui, per la seconda parte di questo viaggio. La scorsa settimana abbiamo visitato l'Alsazia, ora attraversiamo il confine ed andiamo in Germania, per la precisione nel Baden-Württemberg.

Schlossplatz

Stuttgart's focal point is Schlossplatz (Castle's square) where both the Old Castle (Altes Schloss) and the New Castle (Neues Schloss) stand. 
If you want to visit the city centre only, I'd say you can spend half a day here, while you're going to need more time if you want to add a visit to the Porsche Museum or the Mercedes-Benz one, to the Ludwigsburg Castle or the pig museum (yes, it's a real thing).

Il punto nevralgico di Stoccarda è la Schlossplatz (Piazza del Castello), dove si affacciano sia il castello vecchio (Altes Schloss) che quello nuovo (Neues Schloss).
Se volete visitare solamente il centro della città, potete dedicarci mezza giornata, mentre vi servirà più tempo se volete aggiungere la visita al museo della Porsche, piuttosto che a quello della Mercedes-Benz, al castello di Ludwigsburg, piuttosto che al museo del maiale (sì, esiste per davvero!!).

Triberg

Triberg is definitely worth a visit! Its waterfalls (entry costs €5/adult) are easily accessible and close both from the town centre and the parking. I'd suggest you to park in town for at least a couple of hours to give you the time to see the waterfalls from different points and have a stroll around Triberg.

Triberg and Furtwangen have an history of cuckoo clocks makers, so you'll find respectively a shop with 1.000 clocks and a museum dedicated to them.

Triberg vale la pena di essere visitata! Le sue cascate (entrata € 5/adulto) sono facilmente accessibili e vicine sia al centro città che ai parcheggi. Vi suggerisco di parcheggiare in città per almeno un paio d'ore in modo da darvi il tempo di vedere le cascate da più punti e farvi un giretto a Triberg.

Triberg e Furtwangen hanno una tradizione di orologi a cucù, quindi vi troverete rispettivamente un negozio con 1.000 orologi ed un museo a loro dedicati.

Hohenzollern Burg

The time to visit the Hohenzollern Castle is very variable: first you should decide if you want to climb or take the shuttle (From the higher car park it takes 25 minutes on foot, if you opt for the shuttle is € 3,30 per adult for a return trip) and if you want to visit the outside plus the cellar and both chapels or even the inside rooms. This is because there are two type of tickets and visits are only through scheduled guided tours. Here you can find all the info.

Il tempo da dedicare alla visita del castello di Hohenzollern è molto variabile: prima dovreste decidere se volete arrivarci a piedi o prendere la navetta (dal parcheggio più alto ci vogliono 25 minuti a piedi, se optate per il bus il costo è di € 3,30 per adulto per andata e ritorno) e se volete visitare gli esterni, le cantine e le cappelle o anche le stanze interne. Questo perchè ci sono due tipi di biglietti diversi e le visite all'interno sono possibili solo tramite tour guidato ad orari prefissati. Qui trovate tutte le informazioni.

Tübingen.Tubinga

Tübingen is really nice, you should visit it, even if only for a hour or so, you won't regret it. I mean, look at this square!

Tubinga è molto carina, dovreste davvero visitarla, anche se avete solamente un'oretta da dedicarle, non ve ne pentirete. Guardate questa piazza!

Food: not mentioning the usual staples in french and german cuisine that you can find in other regions, in Alsace you should try flammkuche (a very thinly rolled bread dough, topped with creme fraiche/fromage blanc/munster cheese and onions/lardons/mushrooms) and choucroute (a main dish with sausages, charcuterie, cabbage and potatoes), while in Baden-Württemberg dishes of the Swabian tradition include maultaschen (a type of pasta filled with vegetables and/or meat), and, of course, the black forest cake.

Bretzels (in the morning, sliced and buttered), or covered in whatever seed you may think of are common in both areas.

Cibo: evitando di citare i capisaldi della cucina francese e tedesca che potete trovare in altre regioni, in Alsazia dovreste provare la flammkuche (una base di pasta di pane tirata molto sottile, farcita con creme fraiche/fromage blanc/munster e cipolle/pancetta/funghi) e la choucroute (piatto unico con salsicce, insaccati, verza e patate), mentre nel Baden-Württemberg i piatti della tradizione sveva includono i maultaschen (un tipo di pasta tipo raviolo o rotolo di pasta farcita di verdure e/o carne) ed ovviamente, la torta della foresta nera.

I bretzel (al mattino tagliati a metà ed imburrati) o ricoperti di qualsiasi semino che vi venga in mente, sono comuni ad entrambe le zone.

Probably you've already seen some pictures of my holidays between Germany and France on Instagram a while ago, here's a more detailed description, in case you're interested in visiting the area.

Probabilmente avete già visto le foto delle mie vacanze tra Germania e Francia su Instagram un po' di tempo fa, in questo post vi darò una descrizione più dettagliata, nel caso vi interessasse visitare la zona.

Hohenzollern Burg

We landed in Stuttgart (with Lauda motion, owned by Ryanair), rented a car (check out if your rental charges you for crossing the border) and after staying one night in Stuttgart we visited Strasbourg, Ribeauvillè, Riquewihr and Colmar, then we were back in Germany to spend a night in the Black Forest, then visited Triberg, Hohenzollern Burg, and finally Tübingen.

A few considerations about the places we visited.

Siamo atterrati a Stoccarda (con Lauda motion, di proprietà Ryanair), abbiamo noleggiato un'auto (controllate se il noleggio vi addebita un costo per l'attraversamento del confine) e dopo una notte a Stoccarda abbiamo visitato Strasburgo, Ribeauvillè, Riquewihr e Colmar, siamo poi rientrati in Germania per passare una notte nella Foresta Nera, e poi abbiamo visitato Triberg, Hohenzollern Burg e alla fine Tubinga.

Un paio di considerazioni sui posti che abbiamo visitato.

Strasbourg

As this post was becoming a bit too long, I decided to split in half, in this one you'll find the part regarding France, in the next one I'll talk about Germany and Alsatian and Swabian cuisine.

Strasbourg, Ribeauvillè and Riquewihr are really lovely, of course Strasbourg is much bigger, but I'd say that they are all totally worth a visit. 

If you stop in Strasbourg for a day, there's a really cheap ticket that costs € 6,90 for up to three people that you can use for 24 hours on buses and trams (all the other fares here).

Siccome questo post stava diventando troppo lungo, ho deciso di dividerlo a metà, in questa parte vi parlerò della parte francese del nostro viaggio e nel prossimo della parte tedesca ed in più della cucina alsaziana e sveva.

Strasburgo, Ribeauvillè e Riquewihr sono davvero adorabili, naturalmente Strasburgo è molto più grande, ma tutte valgono la pena di essere visitate.

Se vi fermate per almeno 24 ore a Strasburgo, c'è un biglietto davvero economico che vi copre sia per autobus che per tram per 24 ore fino a tre persone per € 6,90 (tutti gli altri tipi di biglietti qui).

A particular mention to the Ribeauvillè wine-making cooperative (Cave de Ribeauvillè, established in 1895), where you can have free wine tastings. And by the way, a bottle of french wine makes a great souvenir!

Una menzione particolare alla cantina sociale di Ribeauvillè (Cave de Ribeauvillè, fondata nel 1895), dove potete assaggiare gratuitamente dei vini. E comunque una bottiglia di vino direi che è un gran bel souvenir!

Colmar

Colmar is a bit crowded, we found lots of groups of tourists and people everywhere in the city centre. I mean, it's nice but felt more touristic than others.

Colmar era piuttosto affollata, molti gruppi di turisti e gente dappertutto nel centro. E' carina, ma più turistica di tutte le altre.

Strasbourg

E poi cominciate a vedere delle case che sono *totalmente* fuori dalla vostra portata e dite ai vostri compagni di viaggio "Sì, questa può anche andare, ma sapete che c'è? Dovremmo assumere un giardiniere!" stile contessa Violet di Downton Abbey.

West Bay: one of those houses on the hill, the higher the better of course, for a stunning view on the Jurassic Coast, but maybe a bit on the inside because you know, I don't want to have all those people walking up the hill to peak at my garden, like those Broadchurch fans 😜

Beer: any of these houses is at walkable distance from the beach, for me the Beach Court, please, even if ... will it have a garden? You know, it's a must!

Beer: tutte queste case sono a pochi minuti a piedi dalla spiaggia, per me può andare bene la Beach Court ... ma avrà un giardino? Sapete che è un must!

Sidmouth: too many hotels on the seafront, better staying on the hill, oh yes, can you spot that white house with lots of land up on that hill?! That's it!

Sidmouth: troppi alberghi sul lungomare, meglio una casa sulla collina, anzi la vedete quella villa bianca con terreno proprio lassù in alto?! Ecco, quella!

In the end, I made my choice: it's West Bay, I mean: this view!

Destination: Royal Turin . Destinazione: Torino Reale

Once upon a time in Italy there was a kingdom (House of Savoy), under which Italy got unified in 1861. In 1946 a referendum abolished the kingdom and the Republic was established (you can read about that part of Italian history here).

In Turin, that has been first capital of the Duchy of Savoy capital and then capital of the Kingdom of Italy, you are brought back in time and our trip starts with the Royal Palace.

La mini-premessa sulla storia d'Italia fatta nella versione inglese ve la salto, che ne dite? Vi dico solo che, ahimè, non ero mai stata a Torino e che ne è valsa davvero la pena!

A Torino si viene trasportati indietro nel tempo, all'epoca del Regno d'Italia di cui è stata capitale, dopo esserlo già stata del Ducato di Savoia ed il ns. viaggio comincia da Palazzo Reale.

Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace) is now a museum with a permanent collection and some temporary exhibitions, ticket includes entry to all the museum complex, which in total is 3km long (almost 2 miles), so bring your comfiest shoes to visit! For further information, click here.

Our next stop is the Palace of Venaria Reale, a royal palace that is sorrounded by a pictoresque village.

Useful tip: there is a coach that links directly the city center with Venaria Reale, which is called Venaria Express, if you happen to finish your visit much earlier than the next coach there are buses (lines nr 72,11 and VE1) that can bring you back to the city centre.

Consiglio utile: c'è una corriera che vi porta direttamente dal centro di Torino a Venaria Reale chiamato Venaria Express, se vi capita di finire la vostra visita con molto anticipo rispetto alla corriera successiva ci sono degli autobus (linee numero 72,11 e VE1) che vi possono riportare in centro.

Travel tips: Unless you fly to Turin, you can reach Turin by train with Trenitalia (high-speed and local trains) and Italo (only high-speed). Another cheaper solution (with longer travel time) is getting by coach with Flixbus.

Very useful: Torino+Piemonte card, if you are meant to visit museums, castles or exhibitions, this card is very good value! More info here.

Consigli di viaggio: vi consiglio vivamente il treno, a meno che vi piaccia da morire guidare per qualche ora (se va bene) sulle autostrade italiane, o al massimo Flixbus per un'opzione economica (ma anche abbastanza lunga per tempi di percorrenza), io ho viaggiato con Italo perchè la tariffa era più bassa che con Trenitalia.

Molto utile: la Torino+Piemonte card, se intendente visitare più di un museo/castello/mostra, conviene davvero! Più informazioni qui.

This time last week I was in London and even if I've been there several times I've discovered new things like ...

1) The views from the Sky Garden are spectacular, and let's say it, free, so you know, a lot cheaper than The London Eye and the Shard!!! Unfortunately Storm Gareth was in full swing, so we couldn't go on the terrace.

1) La vista dallo Sky Garden sono spettacolari e diciamocelo, gratis, quindi molto più economiche del London Eye e dello Shard!!! Sfortunatamente la tempesta Gareth era in piena attività e non abbiamo potuto andare sulla terrazza.

London Stansted airport hotels Alberghi all'aeroporto di Londra Stansted

While planning my next trip to London, I discovered that there are 5 hotels in the Stansted airport area (that you can reach on foot or with a shuttle, ideals for those who get to the airport by public transport). This comes quite handy when you have to leave London very early or if you arrive in London late and don't feel like roaming around with your suitcases in the middle of the night.

The ones reachable on foot are: Radisson Blu and Hampton by Hilton.

The other three, served by a shuttle that leaves from bay 21 of the Stansted Airport Coach Station, are: Holiday Inn Express, Novotel and Premier Inn. More information about the shuttle service on Traveline.

When considering which one to choose, remember that the shuttle costs £3 each way per person and that breakfast is included for Hampton and Holiday Inn.

Unfortunately, I won't be using any of these this time, but if you have any experiences of these hotels, let me know!

Mentre pianificavo il mio prossimo viaggio a Londra, ho scoperto che ci sono 5 alberghi nell'area dell'aeroporto di Stansted (che potete raggiungere a piedi o con una navetta e quindi ideali per chi arriva in aeroporto con i mezzi pubblici). Sono particolarmente comodi se dovete partire da Londra molto presto o se arrivate a Londra molto tardi e non avete voglia di essere in giro con le vostre valigie nel cuore della notte (che so, tipo il volo Ryanair da Ronchi che arriva alle 23 a Londra???, così uno a caso 😉).

Quelli raggiungibili a piedi sono: Radisson Blu ed Hampton by Hilton.

Gli altri tre, serviti da una navetta che parte dalla banchina 21 della stazione delle corriere dell'aeroporto di Stansted, sono: Holiday Inn Express, Novotel e Premier Inn. Maggiori informazioni sul servizio navetta su Traveline.

Quando li considerate per la scelta, ricordatevi che la navetta costa £3 a testa a tratta e che la colazione è inclusa per l'Hampton e l'Holiday Inn.

Sfortunatamente, non riuscirò ad alloggiare in nessuno di questi alberghi per questa volta, ma se avete esperienze di questi alberghi, fatemelo sapere!

Diana: Her fashion story

A quick reminder for all of you who love a fashion exhibition: "Diana: Her fashion story", at Kensington Palace is closing on 17th February.
While you're there you can even see the costumes from the movie "The favourite", until 8th February.
And you know what? When I visited this exhibition I was quite surprised that I actually remembered so many dresses about her (look at the pictures at the bottom of this post that I took in 2017).

- Are you getting to London by train? Usually your answer is yes, then go to Days out guide, you can print vouchers for a lot of attractions paying 1 ticket for 2 people (why not spare some £££ to hop on the London Eye?)

- Subscribe to the visitlondon.com newsletter, to be up-to-date on what's on and interesting articles such as this one Free attractions in London.

- Go to a tourist office, for example there's one near St Paul's Cathedral, and grab a copy of London Planner, it's free and there are lots of ideas on what to do

- If you're staying for some days (more than a week-end) or if you're a large group consider applying for some fidelity cards such as Boots (you can apply online before travelling), Marks and Spencer, Superdrug, Costa Coffee, etc.

My low-cost London tips, third part: accomodation Consigli low cost su Londra, terza parte: alloggi

Hi! I'm terribly late with this post, so let's go straight to see where you could sleep:

Accomodation

Well, I've been in London several times and usually in group of 2 or 3 adults and found that Airbnb was too expensive for me, I've stayed in a Bed and Breakfast that doesn't exist anymore, in an hotel with an awful smell of smoke, holes in the sheets and too many steps to go to breakfast, so finally this is my top three that have what I look for in an hotel: cleanliness, silence, cheap rates (all of these have en-suite rooms, tea/coffee making facilities in bedroom and provide soap/shampoo):

Premier Inn Tottenham Hale (zone 3)

- especially easy to reach if you arrive at Stansted (you don't even need to take the tube 👍), but even if you arrive at Victoria station from Gatwick, you just hop on the Victoria Line and you get there

- the hotel is 2 minutes from the tube/rail station

- free wi-fi

- close to a commercial park that includes Costa Coffee,Boots, Lidl, Next, ...

Note: Premier Inn it's very cheap well in advance, the closer you get to the date of the travel, the higher the rate; consider that their rooms accommodate at maximum 2 adults and 2 children, so if you are for example a group of 3 adults, you need to book 2 rooms.

Travelodge Finchley (zone 4)

- close to tube station

- close to bakery and 2 supermarkets open till late

- family rooms can accommodate up to 4 adults

- plenty of coffee/tea available for free at reception

- several places where you can have breakfast/dine/have a pint

Star Hotel (zone 2)

- rooms may be a bit smaller than the previous hotels but there's an advantage: breakfast is included (and to one of my colleagues' opinion they have one of the best croissant he has eaten in a while, you might want see if he's right)

- free wi-fi

- close to pubs, restaurants and shopping centres

TIP: When you book an hotel check out the check-in/check-out times, they can be very different!

Premier-Inn check-in from 14.00/check-out 12.00

Travelodge check-in from 15.00/check-out 12.00 (early check-in/late check-out options available)

Star Hotel check-in from 13.30/check-out 10.30

Alloggio

Partiamo dalle premesse: sono stata a Londra varie volte, in genere eravamo 2 o 3 adulti e Airbnb era troppo caro, sono stata in un B&B che non esiste più, in un albergo con una orrenda puzza di fumo e buchi nelle lenzuola e troppe troppe scale per andare a colazione, quindi alla fine queste sono le migliori soluzioni che hanno quello che cerco in un alloggio: pulizia, silenzio, economicità (tutti hanno bagno privato, bollitore in camera e forniscono shampoo/sapone):

Nota: Premier Inn è molto economico se acquistato molto in anticipo, mano a mano che ci si avvicina alla data del soggiorno la tariffa si alza notevolmente; tenete inoltre presente che in una camera si possono ospitare al massimo 2 adulti e 2 bambini, quindi se per esempio siete in 3 adulti dovete per forza prenotare 2 camere.

Travelodge Finchley (zona 4)
- vicino alla stazione della metro
- vicino ad una pasticceria e 2 supermercati aperti fino tardi
- le camere possono ospitare fino a 4 adulti
- bustine di te/caffè gratis (oltre a quelli in camera) disponibili alla reception
- diverse opzioni per colazione/cena/bersi una pinta

Star Hotel (zona 2)
- le camere sono un po' più piccole rispetto a quelle degli alberghi menzionati sopra ma c'è il vantaggio che la colazione è inclusa (e a detta di un mio collega che c'è stato, i croissant sono tra i migliori che abbia assaggiato, magari vale la pena vedere se ha ragione)
- wi-fi gratis
- vicino a pub, ristoranti e centri commerciali

CONSIGLIO: Quando prenotate un albergo fate attenzione agli orari di check-in/check-out, posso essere molto diversi!
